Texas Elementary Music TEKS, Kindergarten to Grade 5
Every Texas K–5 music standard in one place: the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Fine Arts: Music (19 TAC Chapter 117, Subchapter A), grade by grade, with the Prodigies lesson that teaches each one.
Texas elementary music is taught to the TEKS for Fine Arts: Music. Each grade has its own section of Chapter 117 (Kindergarten is §117.103, Grade 5 is §117.118), and every grade is organized into the same four strands: Foundations: Music Literacy, Creative Expression, Historical and Cultural Relevance, and Critical Evaluation and Response.
The music TEKS were adopted in 2013 and have not been rewritten since, so the codes below are the ones on your lesson plans today. Pre-K is covered separately by the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines (2022), which we include at the top.

Questions teachers ask
What is the difference between a TEKS strand and a student expectation?
The strand is the big idea (for example, Creative Expression). The knowledge and skills statement says what students learn, and the lettered student expectations under it (like §117.103.3A) are the specific things you teach and assess.
What are the Texas music standards called?
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, Fine Arts: Music, published by the Texas Education Agency (2013).
How many elementary music standards does Texas have?
This page lists 133 standards: 15 in Kindergarten, 21 in Grade 1, 22 in Grade 2, 23 in Grade 3, 26 in Grade 4, 26 in Grade 5.
Does Texas use the National Core Arts Standards?
Not directly. Texas uses its own framework, organized by Foundations: Music Literacy, Creative Expression, Historical and Cultural Relevance, Critical Evaluation and Response. The ideas overlap a lot with NCAS, which is why our compare tool can line them up.
Where can I find the official document?
The official source is https://tea.texas.gov/academics/subject-areas/fine-arts. This page copies the standard text word for word and adds grade-by-grade navigation and lesson matches.
Is there a music curriculum aligned to the Texas standards?
Prodigies PK-5 has a lesson for 124 of the 133 standards on this page (93%). Every lesson is tagged to these codes. Try it free for 30 days.
